HOUSEMAN
EAT LIKE THE CHEF
There are restaurants where dishes are created for the neighborhood’s patrons and then there are ones where the chef cooks what the chef wants to cook. You really can’t go wrong either way but how fun is it to experience food as the culinary genius behind it would eat it themselves? That’s Houseman for ya.
I sat there eating while chatting with Chef/Owner Ned Baldwin as he contemplated the flavors of a new broth he was working on (spoiler alert, it was awesome). While I briefly wore the hat of taste tester of said broth, I couldn’t help but to get excited over all of the other dishes that came my way! His menu is both cohesive and diverse at the same time. Like, did you really want a classic grilled cheese today or is what you really want a game-changing French Onion grilled cheese—please tell me we are on the same page here?! That French Onion Grilled Cheese is too bomb to not order!
Feeling on the lighter side of things, stick to the “Spa” portion of the menu with dishes like Granola with Honey Labneh and Fresh Strawberries. Need heartier? Get the Steak & Fries—really, my point is that there is something for every mood. Which is great because Houseman is kinda off the beaten path. Yes, there are more and more restaurants opening in the area but this is the OG. So when you find yourself on Greenwich Street, getting dangerously close to the West end of the city where it feels more than kinda deserted, this is your restaurant. Go back over and over again because that diversity in the menu has got your back making every breakfast lunch or dinner feel unique and special.
